here's a little peak at the holiday party clutches i'll have available at smart design mart and souk@sat. these are completely made from vintage textiles and i love them! the larger, foldable clutch is in black covered in golden sparkles ($30), and the smaller clutches are made with a shimery antique satin in buttery gold and rose-copper ($25 each).

a little recap of the weekend on this chilly monday morning.

on saturday, my husband made a delicious breakfast apple couscous bake. it was the perfect fall morning breakfast and we polished off the whole thing. it was healthy though so we didn't feel that bad.

i did a little bit of work preparing some wholesale orders for anthropologie. if you haven't heard yet, the store opening here in montréal is pushed back until january, but i know it'll sneak up on me anyway so i want to be prepared. on sunday we hit up the museum of contemporary arts, and coco almost slept through the whole thing. thankfully she woke up in the middle of our visit and was able to see some cool work. here's a little peak at the seripop exhibit - we weren't able to take photos so i snapped this really quickly with my iphone while no one was looking.

after several busy weeks, i'm looking forward to a relaxing weekend. i'm planning to take coco to the contemporary art museum for the triennial, bundle up and spend some time outside, eat yummy food and hopefully sleep in (we'll see if little coco lets that happen!)

oh, and some exciting news : hazel & hunter was chosen for the souk@sat event in december. it's the first time we're taking part in this event and i'm really looking forward to it! i'm going to start prepping early and hopefully not be working at the last minute like i usually do. if you're around montréal in december, you should definitely stop by.

i've been mostly spending a lot of time in the studio, dyeing, sewing and sending out orders, but i promise to try and post here more regularly.

raw textiles is a series of naturally-dyed silk scarves. the silks were dyed by hand with vegetable pigments as part of the raw color project for edwin pelser, a design shop in Den Haag. i think the results are beautiful.

this weekend we went to the mauricie national park to see friends play a show. it was so great to get out of the city and hang out in this amazing park. the backstage area was set up in a way that felt like we were just camping with friends, and coco had a lot of fun and even stayed up for a bit of the show.
around the studio, i've been experimenting with different ways to work with silk. above are some previews of what's coming for fall - a lot of greens and grays and other autumn-y colors.

being vegan and vegetarian for about 16 years means i can't really bring myself to buy things made of leather unless it's recycled and not new. this awesome clutch from k. slade made is made from vintage leather, which i'm hoping means it's recycled...?
either way, it's pretty amazing and i'd love to carry this around every day this summer.

while is was dyeing huge batches of fabric for orders, i decided to include a little romper for coco. i started with a natural cotton piece and dyed it with black dye, and the end result is an awesome black-blue-gray romper. coco seems to love it (i mean, look at her smile!), and i can't wait to dye other mini clothes for her.

i've been so busy working on an exciting project that i've kind of forgotten to post anything on here. i'll be giving more details about what i've been working on soon!
in the meantime, i just wanted to pop in to post about these awesome hand-painted silk shirts from rachel rose. they're all painted or dyed by hand, so each one is totally one-of-a-kind and beautiful.
i've been experimenting with painting on silk lately and you can get pretty amazing results, maybe someday i'll add more silk items to my shop.

last weekend was puces pop here in montréal, and here are a few (blurry) shots of my table that i took quickly with my phone - thanks to everyone who came by to say hi and purchased some stuff! while i was there all day saturday and sunday, coco got to spend some quality daddy time. here they are cuddling and having a latte.

two new bag styles have been added to my shop: the dreamcatcher and the fire priestess tote bags. these are made from thick, untreated cotton canvas and dyed by hand, and are made smaller than my other huge totes - they are just the perfect size for a carry-all tote.

the makers is a project by jennifer causey where she documents artists, designers, printers, artisans, jewelers, ceramists in their studios in brooklyn. the artists featured are some of my favorites, and it's great to sneak a peek inside their creative spaces. above are some of my favorite photos from the project. you should seriously go check it out.

i finally got around to finishing some reupholstered vintage pieces. i keep finding these little chairs and stools from the 60's because they were made locally, but they all have a yucky brown vinyl fabric covering them (take a look at my first one a while back on design*sponge).
i love tearing them apart and dressing them up in fancy new fabric.

i've been thinking a lot about weaving lately, and i'm hoping to get a small loom of some sort to start learning.
in my research, i came across the awesome work of travis meinolf, aka action weaver.
he describes his work as 'interactive textiles' and has a pretty amazing portfolio, as well as a kickstarter project you should check out.
and don't these photos of weaving parties look so rad? why have i never been to a weaving party?

now that it finally feels like spring, i take coco for long walks where we usually stop by the market to pick up fruit, and then the garment district for me to stock up on supplies and browse, and where coco loves looking at all the rolls of fabric and tries to grab everything.

since i mostly work with organic, untreated fabrics that i order from my supplier for dyeing and printing, i rarely buy textiles from these shop...but today i was lured into this tiny hole-of-a-shop that had amazing colorful fabric and i was greeted by a stylish man who basically got busy running around and pulling out all these awesome fabrics for me to look at, mostly dead stock and vintage finds. anyway, i couldn't resist the two fabrics above, both dead stock and in perfect condition. the colorful aztec print is on natural printed linen, and the pastel fabric is a mix of silk, cotton and linen. i'm not sure what i'll be doing with them yet, but i'm thinking of possibly making one-of-a-kind, limited-edition bags or clutches for the upcoming Spring Puces Pop taking place in early june (i'll be there along with some other awesome makers/designers/artists)

muny is a collection of textiles designed in nyc and printed in jaipur with traditional block-printing techniques and eco-friendly dyes. these blankets have three layers of cotton- only the inner layer is printed to make the blankets super soft and cozy. i'm always in awe of the beautiful patterns that can be created with block-printing. the pink chevron blanket would be perfect for travelling with coco this summer.

i've been so inspired lately by all the creativity here in montréal, so i've decided to start a weekly feature on local designers.

first up is ursa minor studio from designer elizabeth hudson. i just recently discovered this line of clothing and accessories and i love the use of natural fibers like organic cotton, linen and silk mixed with leather and tough details. her silk tank tops are dyed by hand and are on my wish list for this summer.

(not for past orders, just starting now).

oh, and in case you're in montréal and are dyeing (yes, i had to make that lame joke) to get a h&h hand-dyed tote bag but hate shipping fees, there are a few available at boutique unicorn right now (with metal)!

some things i've been working on lately...
since being a mom is such a big part of my life these days, i wanted to try creating a bag that was cool and practical for lugging all the stuff i suddenly need to have at all times. if i'm going to be walking around with diapers, soothers and probably some baby barf on my shirt, i might as well have a cool bag, right? i'm still playing around with these but look for some bags in my shop soon...

also, i've been experimenting with mixing dyes to get the perfect shade of pink that i'm looking for - i think this last batch might be a winner.

i wanted to take a break from all the dyeing i've been doing lately and create something with block-printing, so i made this super long scarf last night with my "black mountain" print. i love how block-printing leaves all sorts of imperfections and inconsistencies and comes out different each time. it took a while to get the print on the entire length the fabric, but it's kind of calming and satisfying to press down each print one by one...

i've been doing a lot of hand dyeing and making samples for a new collection. usually when i make a new pillow, i have to live with it for a few weeks to see how i really feel about it. i'm starting to totally love this random pattern with black dyes so this one is probably a keeper. coco's been busy growing some teeth, so she's been a little cranky but still so sweet. that's pretty much it.
